MEDIA AND ELECTIONS

The media plays a direct role in the democratic process. Democracy cannot obtain without the public square; the public square cannot obtain without reliable, all including information shared by everybody” (translation).
Hervé Bourges (former president of the Union of Francophone Press).

CONCEPT NOTE

The media, as a vector of information and a means of educating the general public at election time, plays a key role in the electoral and democratic process, inasmuch as free and transparent election is not only determined by suffrage cast under fitting conditions. Election is likewise assessed by the ease with which electors obtain accurate information on political parties, politicians, candidates and the electoral process in order to make an informed choice.
Beyond the diversity of journalistic code of ethics, media coverage of elections must comply with fundamentals such as the principles of veracity, precision, objectivity, impartiality, equity and the obligation to account for any information published.
